SCADA systems are critically important to the success of large-scale PV production facilities. They enable grid operators to monitor and dispatch power plants in response to constantly changing loads. This article provides a high-level overview of the utility grid with a discussion on how reliability coordinators and balancing authorities work together to maintain power quality and grid reliability. It looks at the challenges that grid operators face and best practices to successfully implement SCADA systems.
Providing stable, reliable power to the grid from a PV system is important, especially where PV penetration is large. Trimark’s supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) technology provides grid stability support at two solar PV sites in Fall River, Massachusetts. Borrego Solar, who built the projects which are owned by National Grid, contracted Trimark to help with voltage regulation power factor control.
