Microgrid Integration Paper Selected for SPI Technical Symposium
Technical Paper to Address Energy Independence for Canada’s First Nation Communities
Folsom, Calif. – August 8, 2017 – Trimark, exhibiting in booth 2519 at Solar Power International (SPI) September 11 – 13, today announced that it will present “Integrating Renewables into Microgrids to Serve Remote Communities” at SPI’s Inaugural Technical Symposium on September 11, 2017 at 2:30 PM.
The presentation will describe how Trimark’s Microgrid Controller unifies management of photovoltaic, wind and diesel generation and battery storage in Fort Severn, Ontario, Canada. Scott Barrington, Trimark’s Microgrid and Energy Storage Alliance Manager, will present the paper.
Fort Severn is a Cree First Nation community of about 90 families on Hudson Bay. It is one of 175 Canadian communities that are not connected to the electric grid. Previously, Fort Severn met most of their electric power needs with diesel generation – at up to 20 times the cost of power in Southern Ontario.
Fort Severn’s microgrid project, which is being developed by Canadian Solar, aims to provide energy independence and reliability. Trimark’s integrated Microgrid Controller will coordinate a diversified portfolio that adds a new photovoltaic (PV) array and battery storage to existing rooftop PV, wind and diesel resources.
This presentation will discuss requirements and key functions of Trimark’s Microgrid Controller including:
- Local and remote monitoring and operations;
- Optimizing generation dispatch based on environmental considerations;
- Visualization and integrated control of generation and load;
- Control over protective relays and reclosers; and
- Communications network that ties it all together.
In addition to the technical paper, Trimark’s Booth (#2519) at SPI will showcase how information technology and SCADA can “Enable the Business of PV Power” by optimizing PV plant revenue; reporting performance issues; meeting compliance requirements; saving time, reducing risk and lowering costs; and proactively managing PV assets throughout their life span.
Trimark is also hosting the Trimark Technology Information Exchange (T2IX) breakfast. This event provides a forum for industry leaders to discuss technology issues and success.
