Trimark Commissions Controls for Luna BESS
Intelligent Battery Control Supports Grid Stability
Folsom, CA, August 4, 2022 – Trimark Associates, Inc., the industry leader in intelligent energy control, today announced that it has commissioned plant controls for the Luna Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Trimark’s Vantage™ SCADA works in cooperation with the Fluence battery controller to manage the 100MW/400MWh BESS and support stable power delivery.
The Challenge
In California’s Antelope Valley, the Big Sky and Big Sky North substations consolidate more than 700 MW of power generation from over 21 utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) resources spread across 60 square miles of high desert.
In this generating environment, Luna BESS is used to support power stability by addressing the challenges of variable irradiance and curtailment. When clouds cross the arrays, Luna BESS can be discharged to support consistent power at the point of delivery (POI). BESS discharges can also be scheduled to extend the time of day that renewable power can be delivered.
The Solution
As a key component of their renewable energy strategy, the Clean Power Alliance (CPA) commissioned the Luna BESS – a utility-scale battery valued at over $100 million. CPA is a Community Choice Aggregator that serves about one million customer accounts in Los Angeles County.
AES Clean Energy developed the grid-connected battery and will manage the resource. Fluence provided the battery system and acted as the EPC.
Trimark’s Vantage™ SCADA receives, validates, and executes ADS setpoints generated by CAISO. Simultaniously, the system works to maintain Voltage at the POI, as required by Southern California Edison’s Grid Code. To meet these requirements, Trimark’s Power Plant Controller measures power values at the POI, then sends real and reactive power setpoint commands to the Fluence BESS controller. Ongoing measurements and set point adjustments are made to maintain the target values.
