Folsom, CA, October 6, 2023 – Trimark has introduced cloud-based, Automatic Dispatch System (ADS) services to help small BESS and PV resources meet CAISO Dispatch Operating Targets (DOTs) which is required for them to participate in the lucrative, Ancillary Services Market.
“Joining the Ancillary Services Market can be a game changer for small BESS and PV resources,” said Tom Short, Trimark’s Vice President of Consulting and Client Relations. “One essential commitment is that the resource keep up with CAISO Dispatches (DOT), which are issued every five minutes.”
“Assessing the DOT and taking action within the five-minute limit can present a significant challenge,” explained Short. “Manual processes can quickly become overwhelmed resulting in missed actions. Ultimately the resource will be removed from the market and may incur other penalties.”
While many small, grid-connected PV and BESS resources lack sophisticated control systems and real-time control, Trimark can automate some simple actions by leveraging logic and communications native to Trimark’s Remote Intelligent Gateway (RIG). This functionality allows the resource to meet CAISO’s 5-minute deadline for action.
Trimark can read the DOT, determine what (if any) action is required, and send an instruction to an RTU or Trimark Data Gateway located on site. That device can then react to ensure ISO compliance, even without the expense of a full SCADA system.
“Trimark’s cloud-based ADS provides an economical solution for small PV and BESS resources to participate in more parts of the energy market,” said Short. “Because the solution leverages existing RIG software and hardware, resource owners avoid the cost of deploying and maintaining additional equipment.”
“In most cases, Trimark will not charge an additional fee when the solution is deployed as part of a Trimark service agreement,” Short promised. When deployed as part of a Support Agreement, Trimark monitors status of ADS/AGC functionality. Trimark alerts the owner if trouble occurs, providing time to correct the issue and/or file a CAISO exemption.
